Straight out of Sci-Fi, Canberra’s iconic Martian Embassy building celebrates its 50th birthday

The Australian Academy of Science's Shine Dome, which is known affectionately as the “Martian Embassy” among locals in Canberra, Australia, recently celebrated its 50th birthday. Designed by architect Roy Grounds and completed in 1959, the iconic building has won numerous awards and has been nominated to the World Register of Significant Twentieth Century Architecture. One of the building's more interesting features: it's surrounded by a moat of water.
