Locus Magazine has posted its Science Fiction & Fantasy 2008 Recommended Reading List. The list, which covers novels, Young Adult books, collections, anthologies, novellas, novelettes, and short stories, is “a consensus by Locus editors and reviewers -- Charles N. Brown, Gary K. Wolfe, Jonathan Strahan, Faren Miller, Russell Letson, Graham Sleight, Carolyn Cushman, Tim Pratt, Karen Haber, and Rich Horton -- with inputs from outside reviewers, other professionals, other lists, etc.” Works about Mars or Martians which I recognize include:
• Marsbound, a novel by Joe Haldeman (Ace Books)
• Rolling Thunder, a novel by John Varley (Ace Books)
• "Tenbrook of Mars”, a novella by Dean McLaughlin, published in the July-August 2008 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact magazine. Won the 2008 Marooned Award for Best Novella or Novelette.
• "Catherine Drewe", a short story by Paul Cornell, published in the anthology Fast Forward 2 (Pyr Books)
• "Mars: A Traveler’s Guide", a short story by Ruth Nestvold, published in the January 2008 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction
• "The Film-makers of Mars", a short story by Geoff Ryman, published online at Tor.com in December 2008
